What We Can Learn from our Pets

Bonnie and unconditional love.

Like many of us, I'm loving spending these summery days walking my dog, Bonnie. It strikes me that there is so much to be gained by getting out in nature, taking time to be in the moment - just enjoying the simple relationship that having a beloved pet can bring us. That pure unconditional love is so precious, and there is much to learn from them about how to enjoy life.

Research validates the benefits of pets for mental health and has proven how animals can help us with depression, anxiety, and stress. In addition, they provide such a lovely, non-judgmental companionship that eases loneliness and helps us feel needed and connected.

Bonnie in Naphill, Buckinghamshire

If a dog were your teacher, you would learn the following:

• When your loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

• Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

• Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

• Take naps.

• Stretch before rising.

• Run, romp, and play daily.

• Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

• Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

• On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

• On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

• When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

• Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

• Be faithful.

• Never pretend to be something you’re not.

• If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

• When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

Nature as therapy.

Client Testimonial – a different kind of horse play!

One of my clients owns and trains horses. They are a huge part of her life. She had a serious accident last year which brought with it some scary challenges for her. One of the significant positives that arose from our work together was bringing awareness to her inner dialogue. Our sessions encouraged her to start treating herself with the same kindness, compassion and understanding as she held for her horses. She is still mending, but the journey has been made so much easier with her new ‘horsey’ attitude towards herself and her physical and emotional struggles.
